Comments in Media Manager
Posted by Moog Gravett on October 30, 2009 at 9:30 amHi guys,
I’m working on a project involving two people working in Vegas simutaneously, from the same footage (all stored on each individual’s machine).
My colleague has written many useful comments about the footage in his media manager browser, which I would like to copy across to my machine. Is this at all possible?
It would really need to be on a large scale – as there around around 2000 clips… (don’t really want to do that one by one 😮 )
Any ideas folks ?
Cheers
Moog

October 30, 2009 at 3:22 pmIf the clips are in the same place on each machine then you could just copy the Media Manager database from one machine to the other. There is no way to share a common database and no way to transfer comments without individual cut and paste.

Hi John.
Sony Vegas is a great product, but I am just curious why they don’t provide for this?
As was noted in a previous thread, Vegas seems like the best software, but as someone else said it is ‘losing the war’ in spite of its superiority. Part of this would seem to be that it does not go after the commercial market. Just a question.

The Media Manager seems like an unfortunate victim of the market that Vegas was playing in at the time. When the Media Manager first came out, customers protested and were very vocal about not wanting it installed on their PC because it used Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine. They made like they didn’t want any “evil” Microsoft software on their PC which is absolutely ridiculous because the operating system itself is from Microsoft. I mean if you hate Microsoft that much, go buy a Mac or use Linux and stop whining. Anyway, customers complained so much that Sony finally made the Media Manager a separate install but it took two releases before they finally did that.
So the elegance of the Media Manager was lost on a market that, I assume, didn’t have any media to manage and couldn’t understand what it could do. I have a training DVD at VASST (Media Manager Demystified) that will show you the power of this component of Vegas and ACID (it’s a shared component between both products). It’s a brilliant idea.
Let’s hope that now that Sony is squarely targeting the professional market, that they will begin once again to enhance the Media Manager with sharable databases and other functionality that will make it even more valuable.

November 1, 2009 at 10:31 pmI was never opposed to it. I was just never sure what it was supposed to do. On top of that, it always crashed when starting (Vegas 8 Pro as I recall), so I was always a bit remorseful that I installed it. I haven’t even tried to install it recently. I still don’t know what it is supposed to do.
If it saves copies of old video, I can’t really see a need for it.

The Media Manager is a database for cataloging and quickly finding media in your libraries of stock footage, images, music, etc. If you don’t have any media to manage then you probably don’t need it. I find it extremely useful for finding all of my stock media.

November 18, 2009 at 4:17 pmPerhaps I will try it again. I do have a need right now for something which will help manage my photos. Is there an explanation somewhere of how it is used?

As I pointed out a previous post, I have a complete training DVD on it which is pretty extensive. Other than that, there is just the documentation that comes with Vegas.
