“Coming Up” Mortise Graphics?
I’ve been asked to build a graphic for a show that is in the style of the ESPN or Sport Center “Coming Up” graphics. Basically a frame around the video that gives viewers some text preivew to what will be the next clip or segment in the show will be. As one ends, the next would slide up to the top and so on. Any idea on the best way to build this so that it is easy for the editors to customize and move the text around? Is there a better software than After Effects for this kind of broadcast style graphic? I’ve attached a sample of what they are looking for. Thanks in advance!

Your best bet is to start out in Photoshop – think through what the mechanics of the final animated graphics are going to be and build your layers to reflect that. Then when you bring it in to AE as a Composition, you will have everything on separate layers, so you can build your animations, flares, fades, etc. easily.
Bear in mind that these types of systems are generally powered by a system such as VizRT, a powerful 3D live-broadcast engine in which all of the moves and templates are pre-programmed (lots of pre-production planning), and it all works on the fly:

Vizrt! That’s what I was looking for. I’m sure they will prefer to go with the method you prescribed using photoshop, but I wanted to be able to show them the other option. Thank you so much.

While the thread is old, I don’t think that the issues have changed much. We looked at VizRT, had a demo system in place, and went through some training at the broadcast station I used to work at. You basically have to have someone in house who’s job it is to plan and build the templates, and program the moves (and I mean program). There’s a lot of ramp up time. If you’re CNN, FOX, or ESPN, it doesn’t matter – throw money and personnel at it – done! If you’ve got a budget and limited staff – think of alternatives. Have you priced a VizRT system? You’re looking at anywhere from a quarter to a half million dollars:
