Maya can do it okay because of it’s vector renderer. South park doesn’t use Maya to create it’s look though. The show is animated in Maya, but the look of the show is done before Maya in Corel draw and PS. They scan in textures (often construction paper) and other things then just map them to the characters. Then they flat light it.

The sketch & Toon in C4D is pretty amazing though. As far as AE, there are a few recipes I’ve seen if you search the archives, but none I think will get you near as close to hand animating or setting up 3D geometry for a specific toon renderer.

But this has been asked many, many times so I’d peruse the archives with keywords like: Cel, comic, vector look, MK12, etc…

and you should find a handful of nice tricks.

    Frank –

For something quick, you can throw on “Find Edges” from the “Stylize” menu.
This will give you some decent outlines. Duplicate your layer and put the
effected copy over the non-effected original. Experiment with transfer modes,
maybe add some posterization, color correction, etc.

Some other plugs can give you more options. Tinderbox “Edge Detect” and
    DigiEffects “Edgex” come to mind.

But again, this is just a quick trick. Don’t try to sell this to the guys
witht the goatees and horn-rimmed glasses.
