I want to apply an effect such as audio waveform to a complete word or phrase but can’t work out how to either join the masks or apply it to all masks.

What currently happens is I create outlines from the word and am left with each letter having a unique mask, I’ve gone through help and the meyers book but cant find the solution yet, Im sure it something obvious but help would be appreciated!

Make your audio waveform a greyscale image. So the waves are white over a black BG. Pre-comp this layer. Now use it as a luma track matte on the text layer.

So the waveform image will only allow your text image to be shown where there are waveforms.

Basically you are trying to deal with only masks where I think using mattes are easier in this case.
