Combine and Save effects?
Posted by Blake Porter on October 25, 2007 at 3:04 pmIn FCP6… Is there a way to combine a couple different effects (Like a Glow and a Blur) and then save as a single preset effect?

if you apply a combination of effects to a clip and you’d like to save and reuse that combination of effects/settings again then you can save them together as a filter pack
create a new bin in your Effects >> Favourites folder, that bin will be your “pack” (or you could create a new project to hold all your custom effects, if so, then create the bin in that project)
now load the effected clip into your Viewer window and switch to the Filters tab
in turn, or together, drag the filters from the clip into the new bin
note that the filter combination probably acheives the desired look only when applied in a specific order … FCP however lists them in alphabetic order, so its advisable to rename each effect with a numeric prefixso thats it. you’ve created a filter pack. when you want to apply that particular combo then you just drag the folder itself to the clip and all the contained effects will be applied
hope it helps

October 26, 2007 at 1:18 amThank you Andy,
Any idea how to apply similar techiques to FCP Transitions? I would like to have a Chroma / Luma / Blur / Glow / washout to white, type of reusable transition. I can do this in AE but what a pain to import and export footage… -

October 26, 2007 at 5:04 amdon’t think that would work for transitions
personaly, when I need to create a custom transition for regular use then I tend to right-click the basic transition and choose Open in Editor … that opens the script into FxBuilder. I do the same for the other effects and then figure out how and where to combine the code. not for the faint-hearted, but then neither is it rocket science.
a more straight-forward approach for most folks would be to create a template project (which you can save and reuse as needed). in that project you can build your custom transitions using placeholder clips and then just copy and paste those placeholders into your working project as needed … you’d then copy the real outgoing clip and then “paste attributes” (option-v) selecting the “content” checkbox, same again for the incoming clip.
appreciate its not as straightforward as you might be used to with an Avid for example, but as with all NLEs you win some you lose some
