Hey guys, I have a couple spots that should have been done before the holidays, if the client had paid attention, and just on schedule MY 5.1.4 FCP is acting strange. Me, thinks that it needs a complete re-install, but first maybe somebody has a quicker solution.

This tv commercial is a series of left to right floating boxes. The background looks solid but the edges of the boxes and the edges of the faces in the boxes display varying degrees of a comb look. Serrated if you will. I have tried exporting as 8 bit, 10 bit, DVCpro50, DV, square pixels, lower, none and some are better than the others, but by the time I burn it to DVD (dvd Studio Pro) it looks like somebody dragged a rake thru wet cement. ON some of the exports if you pause the dvd or QT the images look wonderful no problem. It is just when they are moving.

The original footage was shot on our HPX500 in DVCpro50 mode to P2 cards/30p (they show up in FCP as 29.97). I used Raylight to wrap the P2 files with QT. And the images are beautiful. I usually build this clients TV spots on our older G4 Cinewave so I can monitor the video on a CRT, but alas our old Medea RTRX has dropped two drives and is not working. So I am building the spots on our newer Octo core which does not have a video card yet.(Santa didn’t bring the Kona card, cause Visa killed the extra cushion I had saved on my credit limit)

I have checked the settings, toggled the settings, Opened new projects and cut and pasted from the old. Saved as current or all the rest. It smells like a re-install, but I hope somebody has a better solution.

Your post is very confusing. The list of tools you have at your disposal an, we infer, with which you are conversant, implies you know what you’re doing. And yet you seem to be asking a fundamental question about interlacing. Are you?

[Nate Stephens] “The original footage was shot on our HPX500 in DVCpro50 mode to P2 cards/30p (they show up in FCP as 29.97).”

Try changing fields in the sequence settings to “none.” Then re-render.

Bogie, Every other day I think I know what I am doing. But that was back when I just turned knobs and let the three Betacam decks do the rest..

I think my trouble might be, as in another post from today on 30p… So P2 at 30p which shows up in the log-n-transfer as 29.97 really is not 29.97 it is still progressive. So ‘none’ in the settings tab is for progressive..

So it seems that all images in the spot should also be de-interlaced also. So I should de-interlace the background and the logos???

I have tried none a couple of times and it looked better but not perfect once burned to dvd.

This is the first time that I shot the HPX500 for this client. I usually shoot Betacam so yes this is the first time that I have run into this issue…

Someday I will know everything, the next day I will retire

Thanks David, I will try none again. But maybe I think I should de-interlace the non-P2 footage as will.

Does DVD Studio Pro have a special setting for progressive footage? The QT playback of the ‘none’ renders look good, but the DVD burns accentuate the edges interlaced look.

Sure, if you’re mixing non-interlaced and interlaced footage, one of them is always gonna look wrong. And, if you deinterlace the interlaced footage using an NG deinterlacer, that won’t look good either.

David, your not real encouraging today..

I went back and made sure the P2 footage all said ‘none’ field dominance in the properties tab and the timeline was set to none.

This being an old spot template it has an animated logo originally from the clients 3/4″ ten years ago, a freeze frame of their marble walls from 3/4″ (years ago) and two Boris text frames. I set them all to none.

When I play back the mastered QT file on my JVC broadcast LCD monitor using the qt player it does not look bad. (This Mac Pro does not have a video card yet) There seems to be a little edge or crust on the leading edges as the boxes move across the screen. You pause the video and the image is perfect. The crust, I figured was due to the lag in the LCD monitor.

I burn the Mastered QT to DVD (DVD Studio Pro) and the crust turns into the interlaced-comb edges when played back on a TV-Tube.. It is just not as bad as when I use the settings for ‘lower’ in the time line.

Using good old betacam and my Cinewave never gave me this much grief. I either have a setting backwards, need a re-install or am missing a step or button somewhere.

    Thanks for your thoughts.
