Hi all, we are currently running a few mac pros here and 2 of them are getting regular crashes each day randomly. Sometimes when dragging a clip into the timeline, other times you are just scrolling back and forth.

One machine running 10.6.3 and FCP 6.0.6 has this crash thread :

    0 com.apple.QuickTime 0x92ec9dde CountImageDescriptionExtensionType + 219

The Second machine running 10.5.8 and FCP 6.0.6 has this crash thread

    0 com.apple.QuickTime 0x90f91e02 CountImageDescriptionExtensionType + 346

Does anyone know what this means? I took it as quicktime is having an issue with a clip.
    Are these the same problem?

    The following has been tried:

    1. Running corrupt clip finder in FCS Maintenance Pack Launcher (none found) we run clips in DNxHD or PhotoJPEG
    2. All software updates that can be done are done.
    3. Logged in as a different new user, same problem
    4. They both have RAIDs attached that are not giving any problems (hard disk errors etc)
    5. Hard disk space is fine
    6. Removed all quicktime codecs for photoJpeg project. didnt help.
if anyone has any suggestions it would be most appreciated.

    Thanks

Are the PhotoJPEG clips stock by chance?

This is caused when the ImageDescription extension of the file is incorrect, which means that the software you used to create the file didn’t output it correctly.

The reason Corrupt Clip Finder didn’t pick it up is because QuickTime ignores it – only Final Cut Pro crashes when it encounters it. This is an FCP bug.

I believe I know how to fix it. If you get in contact with me, I can send you a beta build of QT Repair that should be able to fix it – if the issue is what I suspect it to be. You’ll have to identify the problematic clips manually though.

    My software:
FCS Maintenance Pack – Tools to keep Final Cut Studio running smoothly and fix problems when they arise
FCP Versioner – Backs up Final Cut Pro projects to XML and creates changelists for each revision
