Hello, and thanks in advance for looking.

Any footage, logos, text etc I place on my timeline containing the colour red looks jaggy and unacceptable.

I mainly shoot in DVCProHD 25p and have tested many different settings on my timeline (ProResHD etc) but can’t seem to shake the problem. I know my YUV theory and the normal problems with red, but this issue goes way beyond this and unfortunately my main client has a bright red logo!!

When I change the sequence settings to some codec’s (DV PAL and DVCPRO 50) my sequence displays the colour correctly, but after rendering the problem occurs. Changing the sequence video processing options does not seem to help.

Have tried logos with alpha channels and solid colours- problem also effects any red text generated from within FCP.

I also have a Kona 3 card but regardless of whether I render my timeline via the card codec’s or not the problem still occurs.

Any Ideas as I cant believe I am the only one to have these problems?
    Cheers,
    Simon

anyone working in dvcpro-25 or DV has this problem.

    its inherent to that bitrate/codec.

all you can do is make sure its in the red safe area on a vectorscope
    target (aka less saturated)

Pure RED as a color is problematic in all NTSC based video.

Fortunately in HD Rec 709 its awesome, but that doesn’t help you now.

try to tone down the red a bit and that should help.

if you are not going back to tape, you can change the compressor/codec in your
sequence setting to ProRes, that should help tremendously, but delete all
your renders before testing it out and absolutely be monitoring on an external
monitor and not the program window to see the true result.

DVCPro HD has artifact issues with bright colors and Red is definitely one of them. However, I’ve been able to get Red to look good with anything that passes through Color. If you can convert all your material to ProRes during ingest, that’s better or if you’re shooting P2, convert it to ProRes on the way in.

oh shoot, I didn’t realize you were in dvcpro HD.

I’ve dealt with RED in that codec. your RED is likely way beyond
broadcast safe if your seeing that problem.

I was able to make reds pop on a tv show without the artifacts.

He’s working in DVCPro HD 25p, not DV.
