colour correction for broadcast
I work with an guy who provides me with artwork: photoshop and illustrator files.. Trouble is (as motion novices) we overlooked the issue of colour – up to now i had been only adding the “broadcast colours” effect to layers and producing renders for the web that looked fine to the eye, ignorant to the real tv broadcast process
However the other day I was trying to get a export an clean and crisp looking uncompressed animation (that I rendered off in after effects), as a quicktime using the “high quality broadband” pre-sets in final cut pro. But even before the final export, It looked terrible in final cuts viewer and my tv monitor.
I put a post on the cow – It turns out the extremely bright red background was way off the vectorscope scale – I tried to correct the saturation using FCPs colour tools but could only maintain original sharpness at the expense of brightness – animation became way too dark to use.I need to fix a couple of previous projects and I’m not sure if i should:
1 correct colour in original artwork files? – lower the levels, not sure how or what procedure – (although i do know graphics software well) or what the max colour saturation values should be for video…
2 correct colour in after effects, is there a proper way a measuring and adjusting colour levels?
3 correct colour in Final cut pro – tried this but couldn’t work it out, image got sharper but much darker- my guess is i shouldnt be fixing anything too much in FCP
4 Just not use bright colours in the first place – need to find out the “limits”
its true we learned to run before walking, problem is when i get out the manual i keep nodding off…
also I’m not sure if I should approach a web movie differently to tv broadcast movie in terms of being precise in preparing colour – but it seems clients do want a full size version for other possible uses, so seems wise to keep the proper broadcast standards for all projectsI’d by very grateful to anyone for feedback on this – its doing my head in…

weird thing is: I just tried aharon robinowitz colour safe AE tutorial but it didnt seem to work for this – reds are still off the vectorscope scale in FCP and look very pixely in the viewer, unless i change the sequence settings to animation instead of DV
I think the red background layer in this After effects project is just too bright, it only starts to look better in FCP when i lower the saturation right down but the image goes so dark – far from being a proper red –
and as for getting a non-pixely web sized render out from FCP- forget it!… (but the white version looks fine!)

Is there any particular reason you’re rendering out of AE in a DV codec?

I rendered out out AE as uncompressed animation..
then tried changing the FCP sequence settings from dv to animation to see the difference: that is it “looked” ok as a animation sequence, not as DV though – and a cant seem to get a clean web export from FCP or compresser
