  • Colour correction, does this look acceptable?

    Hi everyone,

I have just successfully keyed a DV video for the first time and have added colour correction and a shadow but can’t decide if it looks like the subject is really a part of the picture or not. I used an image from ‘Riot Gear’ as my background plate.
Here is the image I keyed:

So do you think I have done this successfully? Please be honest and if not, any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Pat

    Hi Pat,

From the still, this looks good. Obviously a big part of keying is making it look good in motion too, which is notoriously difficult with DV footage. But yeah, good going! What I might also suggest – because it doesn’t seem like you’ve done it already – is that you add noise to your image layers to match the noise in your footage. Andrew Kramer has a cool preset that can help you do this in the presets section at videocopilot.net.

    Hey Simon,
Thanks a lot, i am very happy to hear positive feedback on this. As for matching the grain, thanks for the heads up with it, it will definetly help the matte to look more realistic. 🙂

    Thanks,
    Pat

[Pat Jaeger] “So do you think I have done this successfully?”

I would recommend a little bit of light wrap perhaps (this might help with that hard edge around the subject’s hair). Be careful not to over do it with light wrap though, it can start to look very hokey very quickly =)

Other than that it’s looking good.
