    Hi folks!

I’m working with Sony Vegas Pro 10 and doing some basic colour grading on a scenic seaside scene. My director has asked me to convert the footage to black and white, which is simple enough, however, I want to give it a slightly more stylised look than just simple black and white, and add some grading. I’ve tried 75% BW which looks nice, but I want to present him some different options and I’m looking for ideas. I’ve uploaded a small clip of the footage as is – let me know if you have any hints or ideas to make it pop.

    Thanks a lot!

You could try going full B&W and then adding a color to make a “monochrome” look, like all grades of brown or orange or blue, whatever.

Magic Bullet looks offers several presets that you can switch between to display a whole range looks.

first thing I would do to this footage is to grab the ‘curves’ plugin and bump up the midranges. This is more of a luminance thing than a color thing, but I think this footage could use it cause their faces are little dark. If you bend the curve up a bit and then give it a slight “S” twist, grab the node and pull it to the left a bit, you can get slightly different ‘film’ qualities while brightening their faces a bit. Boosting the mids more gives it a bit of a glow. Just don’t go too crazy. Not sure a ‘glow’ is what the director wants.

Blacks are too crushed for my liking…. Push up the gamma… Watch the sky, its pumping luminance…

To get the right B&W look, you will need to play with the RGBYCM levels to get the nice luminance tones from the existing chroma.

Try exporting to Resolve Lite… You will have more control… (presuming your final output is HD and not 2k)

I forgot to mention that there is a nice blur tool in Resolve…. Stick a bit on the higlights only.

Thanks a lot everyone – I love the idea of adding a colour Kelly, I’m going to have play with it now.

I don’t have the Magic Bullet software but will look into it, and Tim, I have played with and created an S curve as per your advice. Will upload a new version soon 🙂

In the meantime, any more ideas are very welcome!

These presets may help you in your search: https://vegasaur.com/film-looks.

They require Vegas Pro 11 or newer, but you can watch video samples 🙂
