  • colour correcting whole reels or master clips?

Posted by Simon Bryant on March 3, 2008 at 5:31 pm

    Hi,

I’m onlining a show which was conformed into FCP 6.0.2. The show has two different language versions which are for the most part the same pictures, but durations of shots occasionally change because of the length of times it takes to say things. There are also two cutdown versions. All versions were conformed into one sequence, so that means that in some cases the same master clip appears four times.

I’m now colour correcting and wondering if there is a way to grade a clip and then have all its occurrances in the seq take on that colour correction. Rather than constantly having to copy and paste…

I know in avid symphony you can grade whole reels – which would be a decent start, although it would be preferable to just grade individual master clips. Can I do this in FCP?

You can apply filters to a master clip and they’ll go down to timeline… But since you already have timelines made, no, you’re stuck with copy and pasting.

The nearest you’re going to get is by doing an Edit > Find All in the timeline.

Search for something unique in the clip name that will only pull up the clips you want, click the Find All button to highlight the matching clips in the sequence, then either do a Paste Attributes or drag the desired CC filter onto the selected clips.

Just be wary of doubling up filters when you paste 🙂
