Colorista Issue…..blowing out detail in highlights
I’m doing some CC with colorista on a DVCPRO-HD 720P sequence.
I noticed that without even touching the controls of colorista, simply adding the filter to the clip, is removing some detail in the highlights and shifting the white highlights a slight yellowish. I see it in the scope too, theres a slight change going on.
Adding the 3-way CC that comes with final cut doesn’t do this.
Anyone know why Colorista does this? There have been scenes I cannot use colorista for since it does, this so I use the 3-way instead.
I was under the impression that Colorista would fullfil all of my color correction needs except secondary.
Am I wrong?

AH yes…this is a known bug. Funny how you don’t think of these things until someone mentions it. I just deal with it.
How do I deal? I use the 3-way Color Corrector first to bring down the highlights. I limit the effect to the Luma so that I ONLY bring down the really hot highs. THEN I apply Colorista.
They know and they are working on it. Wish they’d fix it, but I think they are too busy with Magic Bullet LOOKS.

I was REALLY hoping you were going to say that.
Is it mostly an issue with scenes that have some blow out in them? Other scenes like dark and mid lit with little or no whites correct really well.
Well, alrighty then, the 3-way it is for those few clips.
I sure hope they fix that soon.

Yup. Colorista crops off anything over 100IRE….everything else remains the same.

Shane you’ve saved me months of agonising as my cheap & quick colour corrector in beta does the same and I was beginning to worry about it 🙂

would you mind explaining that a little more detailed?
I see the check box for “Limit Luma” in the sliders control of the 3 way, which other slider do I move to bring them down?
The slider beneath the “whites” wheel is not doing what I though t it would.Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question.

You could also lower the highlights with the ProcAmp filter instead of the 3 Way CC. It’s a little simpler, and you won’t have to fiddle with the luma selection.

It will be interesting to see if the problem occurs on the handover of data from FCP to plugins and back or if it is the actual headroom of the plugin itself.

Has anyone tried to use Magic Bullet Looks yet to see if this is happening here, too?
Only reason I ask is because it would be silly if its only an issue with Colorista. I would think that Looks would also have this issue. I’ll look into it on my end but I’d like to see if this is an issue with anyone else.
