Hey Guys, I am editing this footage here that someone else shot and edit before. All this material was shot by a window. This video 1.5 hr long but in middle of it the color start to drift because of the sun. Do you guys have any suggestions?

    Hi Adam,
Good opportunity to learn about :”Color Correction”.
In the FCs manual you have a lot of info to start with.

You will have to try and smooth the differences with color correction. If you are a beginner then the 3 Way CC in FCP is the place to start. The manual is good for describing how to use the CC and it is fairly intuitive.

More advanced users would use ‘send to Color’ as Color is a much more comprehensive grading tool. There are limits with what you can achieve with color matching as the basic lighting angles will also change so continuity will always be a compromise.

Thanks Guys. I understand how to use the 3 way color correction filter but seem like I am going have learn color. But is there way fix with this huge jump by 3 way color correction in fcp? The way this footage seem like it was shot by window as key light and seem like it was cloudy day. Also you see color start to change when magic hour in some other footage.

If you use the 3-way color corrector keep in mind that you will want to cut your long video up everything it shifts colors. Add long dissolve on the cuts to help blend from one color correction to another. Best of luck.

If you want to learn Color then you want to buy Stop Staring and Start Grading with Apple Color. You will not regret your purchase.

[Adam Berland] “this footage seem like it was shot by window as key light and seem like it was cloudy day. Also you see color start to change when magic hour in some other footage.”

That’s just badly controlled lighting, and you simply have do your best with it to try to make it all appear to match. This happens all the time, even in big films, and colorists have work very hard to develop tricks that make it less obvious. Go back and look at Jaws, it has entire scenes that are comprised of shots that were done on different days, with cloudy, sunny, and even rainy days all combined fairly seamlessly together.

This is why most of the expensive shows on TV are graded by dedicated professional colorists using DaVinci. Color grading is not easy, and if must be learned by lots of trial and error and hard work. There are no short cuts or simple solutions.
