  • color shift between stop and play FCP HD

this has been posted before without resolution, and it is quite annoying. when using fcp hd 3 way color correction 10 bit sdi ntsc the color shifts when you play the sequence. if the sequence is stopped and you adjust the color using the filter, it changes quite noticeably when you play the clip. i believe it is warmer (more red) when stopped, but shifts more to green while playing. the play color is the accurate one as that is what lays to tape. so what you end up having to do is stop the timeline, adjust color, play and see the effect, then stop and adjust and try to guess what adjustments you need to make. we have noticed this over various os and driver updates with no change. we see no change with effect handling set to bmd or fcp hd. also overlays and wireframes turned on or off does not fix it. anyone else notice or fixed this?

    os 10.3.8
    fcp hd 4.5
    bmd 4.8
    qt 6.5.2
    ntsc 10 bit

    Hi,

Turn off “image and wireframe” and “show overlays” in your Canvas.

    Thanks,
    Craig

so “image” has a check mark and “show overlays” has a check mark and you say that works? as I said we tried every combination of this with no luck. I will try it again on monday. where did you get this info? trial and error? do you get no color shift? we are all digibeta 10 bit ntsc, gen locked facility, broadcast ntsc sony monitors, tektronix scopes and consistently see the problem on two decklink extreme online edit bays.

I’ve posted the same ’cause I have the same problems in PAL.
ColorCorrection is a joke. Trial & Error.
Image/Wireframe or Overlays didn’t help me here.
Had no other reactions, responses, tips from BMD.

    Greetings

This is an effect of using real time, which is for preview ONLY, which I responded to Ewe’s question a while back. The BM RT is superior to FCP RT in this respect, so I would set Effects Handling to Blackmagic for Color Correction.

When you stop, you are seeing the full rendered version, when playing you are seeing the preview.

    Or, just render.

    Hi Adam,
I understand what you mean, and it is fine to know the reason for this behaviour – but it doesn’t make it better to work with. Correct, render, correct, render…..
Doesn’t make sense in my opinion and I don’t know this from other systems (the A..D stuff) I worked on. Kind of “Almost near realtime aproximately WYSIWUG color correction”
It’s hard to explain to clients who’ve been in a Symphony or Pogle before (well – they paid way more money there…)

well, at least it’s good to know that this is a totally useless feature which has caused me more embarassment with clients than it’s worth.
are there any color correction plugins for fcp that work right in the program?

I think it is too hard to say it is totally useless.
Fine for normal work, but you cannot do dedicated scene-by-scene color correction jobs with clients in your neck.
Maybe BMD just hadn’t thought about it up to now.

well what about another solution? does “color finesse” by synthetic aperture work? if it would accomplish this in FCP without the color shift it would be well worth the $600.

The versions I tested didn’t do any realtime from FCP at all. After pressing the o.k.-button inside the CF plugin you could see the results.
I’m looking for a better coco myself. There is “Final Touch” from SiliconColor at about 5000$.

Thinking about purchasing it too 🙂

yeah I saw that, but i’m not sure i have the skills or environment for something that serious. we use Sony pvm 20 L/5 monitors, so i don’t think they are high end enough. we aren’t colorists, but just need something that works, and CF seems to have more features than fcp 3 way. if I set effect handling to off will that give me accurate results (will have to render of course.)
