Color palette remap – color clamping?
Weird challenge that has a bunch of us baffled here at work –
The nature of our project requires that we only use a handful of specific colors in our end result: a palette of 93 specific colors. So, for example, picture a video image converted into a mosaic of 100×100 tiles – initially those tiles would be colors averaged from the original image. The challenge it to remap them to the specified palette of 93.
The only way I’ve been able to pull this off is with a freeware program called “Andrea Mosaic”. You provide it with a source image, then a folder filled with the “tiles” you want to use for the mosaic, and Voila! it does this.
But MAN I’d prefer to use After Effects for it.. Just can’t figure out how….Any plug-ins or ideas out there?

I’d use the Colorama effect for this.

Colorama only allows 64 points on the output cycle, so for a palette of 93, I think you’ll have to divide the palette, pull a key, and treat two input ranges separately.
