What is the correct way to import and export footage in to AE to get the most correct output ?

I often use AE to clean up footage and remove microphones and such. Just the other day I imported some DVCPRO HD 720p material removed some disturbing pixels in the corner and exported the clip with the exact same settings. When I got the clip back to FCP it was around 10% brighter than the original clip.

What is the best way to avoid this ? What did I miss ?

It’s possible that you’re running into known problems with QuickTime’s handling of gamma.

Here’s a technical support document on an issue that may be related to what you’re seeing.
