  • Color Grading Choices for Skin Tones in a Live Concert/Poor Lighting Environment

Most of my footage is of live music with quickly moving subjects and changing lights. Mainly, I’d like to warm and “pop” the skin tones without compromising the blacks and whites in the background. When using “Change to color” or secondary color to isolate skin tones, it’s not creating a very thorough mask of skin and produces some noticeable demarcations within shadows on the skin. I’m aware that could be due to my inability to do it better, but the best luck I’ve had early on is simply to duplicate the video track and greatly exaggerate the ORANGE for skin tone then lower the opacity. But I’m assuming this is a crude method. I’m hoping anyone can offer their opinion on best work flow for skin tones in a somewhat erratic shooting condition, to help aim me in the right direction of many choices.

    Thanks.

[Samuel Smith] “to help aim me in the right direction of many choices.”

Here’s one: Leave the finessing alone and grade what you can grade. Trying to get a natural effect in a dark/coloured concert situation is nigh impossible.
