Ok. I have a Panasonic DVX-100. I know about the chroma pattering problem, or at least I tought I did. Occaisonally on highly saturated reds, the color would go pixelated. Wasn’t ever a huge deal to me or my clients.

Then I go to Adam Wilt’s page to see his demo video file of the chroma patterning. His pulsated, and didn’t show the distortion mine did.

So I taped a play a few weeks ago, which was set in pitch black. The actors were lit only by highly saturated blue and green spotlights, and I got this footage:

And I was floored. It looks terrible.

Is this Chroma Patterning, or is there something wrong with my settings or my camera?

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

Looks like not enough light to get a proper shot. It happens.

Lack of light can cause that kind of distortion? There was almost no light, but it was live theatre and there wasn’t anything I could do about it. Weird thing is, the whole show was lit that way, but not all of it showed that problem (see second clip). It only seemed to show up on deep blues and greens.

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks.

Blue only makes up about 11 percent of the signal, so the rest of the camera is not being called into play. A little gain may have helped, or perhaps a 1/24th shutter speed, to just let a little more light in. I think Noah hit it.

    Best,

I’m not sure that we have came to the correct conclusion just yet. I am having this same problem, and only on saturated Reds. Different shoots, different lighting setups, and the red is always pixelated. Does anyone else seem to be having this problem? I have had 2 DVX’s and I seem to remember the last one doing the same thing. Could we do some tests? I could upload some pictures of my footage is anyone has some space.

Red is always problematic for video cameras. Send a still if possible but I’d suspect it is not out of the ordinary. This is 4:1:1 5:1 compressed DV from 1/3″ chips folks. There’s a little give and take.
