Activity Forums Adobe After Effects Color Disappears in Trim Paths

in Illustrator you’ll have to make sure that the linedrawing is also traced as a single line drawing, and not the shape that represents a line.

You want the “strokes” setting in Illustrator, but you’ll probably have to do some manual corrections and cleanup to get it right.

With the default image trace settings straight lines for example, become a thin rectangle or thin rounded rectangle. Those have more points, and trim paths in AE will reveal the circumference of that shape, a real path has a start and end point and the thickness and roundness is defined by the stroke, not the shape.

I have experienced this a lot. To further clarify what Filip said. If the path in Illustrator is not a true stroke it will not convert correctly. What you end up with is a bunch of merged paths “simulating” a stroke. You need to go into Illustrator and change any compound path to true stroke. You also need to make sure that the stroke is “aligned centered” on the path. If the stroke is aligned inside or outside in Illustrator your shapes in After Effects will still come in as merged paths. The conversion process from Illustrator to AE definitely has some quirks, but once you learn them it becomes easier to trouble shoot.
