I have a question regarding how colour reproduction on a computer monitor is not the same as a TV.

As I don’t have a monitor or TV hooked up to my laptop I’m seeing a big difference in the brightness and contrast when I put my work onto DVD. I can however hook up my video camera, (Sony FX1) and I’m able to view the footage via the fire wire in real time, on the camera monitor…. Do you think this is a good guide to go by for now?

    Cheers.

    Steven.

For video destined for TV, there is not way to do a good job of editing without an external monitor. There are other issues besides colors and gamma that can only be seen on a TV. Even a cheap 13″ works better than nothing.

Your problem is related to Color Temperature, and the setup of both the Computer VGA and TV/Monitor….

You answered Cheers, so I’m thinking PAL is your video standard, right?

Either NTSC or Pal Broadcast monitors wants to be 6500D Kelvin for color temperature of display… It’s best if computer monitor is that, too.
Adobe loads a Gamma program with PPRO which is quite good, so at this point I’d say your VGA is probably correct, as long as Contrast and brightness is not at an extreme… Contrast is usually set for the lighting in the room at the time, with Brightness adjusted so the Pludge is just visable (brighter one, not darker one) in SMPTE Bars.

If you want a decent multi standard (NTSC/PAL/SECAM) video monitor for SD video use, with Composite, Component:(RGB/YUV), SVideo
look into a Sony PVM14M2U (M4U is higher resolution CRT)
