When chroma keying in post, is it such a big deal if the footage is just 8 bit 422 and not 10 bit 422? I’ve read before that having a 422 footage is ok, not mentioning color depth.

Normally you don’t get much choice when someone gives you the footage, you just have to deal with what you’ve got.

When you’re the shooter yourself, you normally use the gear you have.
When it comes to chroma keying, be afraid of shallow depth of field, as some parts of your subject will be unsharp, creating a dificult key.

And, if you’re the shooter, paying a lot of attention to the lights will pay of way more than shooting 10 bits.
Also, do NOT shoot Log or alike, as you will crunch the chroma.

Then there is the software to do the key. Some is good, some is bad, some is brilliant.

But again, decent light is the most important, spend your money there if you can.

as Bouke mentions, good lighting is better than the extra 2-bits of data, but with all things equal, 10-bit has 25% more information than 8-bit so it is a little better to work with.

note, you will want to set your project to 16-bit to use that extra data.

    Kevin,
    it’s not 25%, it’s 400%

the bits come before the previous values, each bit extra doubles the amount of storage.
8 bits is 256 max in decimal
    10 bits is 1024 in decimal…
    (that’s 4 times as much…)

Having said that, we both agree on lightning 🙂

    Thanks Bouke

Thanks everyone for your help! This might be a little off-topic, but which one affects dynamic range: color depth or color sub-sampling? How about bit rate, does it have more effect on dynamic range than the previous two I mentioned above?
