I just finished production on a 30 minute program shot and edited in HDV. One of my segments was shot in a dark pub, so I used color correction to lighten up several of the shots. At the end of the edit I applied a Nattress film effect to the entire project (Effect Preset=Nattress Basic 24fps). After the render I reviewed my work and thought I saw several black frames during the segment I color corrected. When I went through the troublesome areas frame by frame, I noticed that there were no black frames, rather the color correction effect I used to brighten some of the clips turned-off/vanished/did-not-apply during the last frame of the color corrected clip. It seems as though the color correction and film effect do not want to play nice together. Has anyone encountered this before?

Hey Neal, I’ve run into the same problem before. You need to make sure you Film effect is the first effect applied to your clip. You can apply any other filters after the film effect has been applied.

Film Effects have a host of color correction tools to play with. When I use them I rarely use any other color correction. But first off, editing in HDV is a no-no. You should at the very least change your compressor and render.

    Have a wonderful day.

I will experiment more with the film effects color settings, but I do enjoy the ease of use within FCPs Color Correction. As for HDV, our show is delivered for broadcast on an HDV tape (stations requirements) so that it can be broadcast in HD. I am always willing to try a new workflow, but is there another suitable workflow if we are shooting in HDV and must deliver the final on an HDV tape?

    No.
But is a pity that almost all the improvement you can get through CC/Chroma Smoothing will desapear when rendering back to HDV.
