Color Correction question.
Posted by Thedoad on February 3, 2007 at 4:16 amI was recently given a project that is fully finished except for some animation and keying that I am doing in After effects. The only problem the Video has is that 4 or 5 of the daytime outdoor sequences were shot on the wrong camera filter so everything has a blue tint to it. does anyone have a simple way to just correct it to what the normal colors should be? I have photoshop filters that do this But I have minimal experience Doing any color correction. Any help or advise would be excellent.

February 3, 2007 at 1:39 pmThis is actually quite simple using FCP’s 3 Way Color Corrector.
Double click the first clip from the timeline into the Viewer.
Apply the filter.
In the Viewer, bring up the 3Way CC Tab so you see the three color wheels.
Look at your video image in the Canvas for anything that should be white or black.
In the Viewer, click on the eye dropper next to the White or Black wheel, then click in the canvas on the appropriate color (white or black).
FCP will use this information to shift all the colors so the image should correct itself. You can do further tweaking from this point.
If you don’t have anything in your image that’s true black or true white, you can click on something that’s close, and then tweak from there.
Assuming all the shots were done with the wrong filter at the same time, you can copy and paste this first filter to the rest of the shots.

February 3, 2007 at 7:13 pmthanks. I had no idea it was that simple, it worked like a charm and now I have a good tool to use when problems like this arise.
Much appreciated.

Most people have no idea how powerful FCP’s own 3Way CC really is. I color correct broadcast HD episode with it all the time.

I’ll ditto that. Color corrected broadcast HD shows using the 3-way color corrector.

We use the FCP 3 way color corrector all day long to create hours of network programming every week. It is a remarkable powerful tool. However, when Apple figures out how to make “Final Touch” more reliable, I’ll be singing a different tune. Until then, it’s all FCP.

Agreed. Final Touch is better than any CC tool out there except the daVinci. If Apple fixes it, it’ll be a beautiful thing. Until then, we leave Final Touch on the shelf and use FCP’s 3Way.

As an addendum, we were given a review copy of Magic Bullet’s Colorista and I liked it so much, I’m CC’ing my shows with now as well. Sometimes I use both the 3 Way and Colorista together, but the tool really impressed me for just $199.
As Shane Ross noted to me today, not Luma Limit at this point on the tool, but I really like the way it handles overall color correction more than the 3 Way. Seems much cleaner and the colors are “smoother” with no noise being introduced by the filter.
