  • color correction plug in with curves?

Posted by Bruce Greene on April 6, 2007 at 6:57 pm

Does anyone know of a FCP plug-in that allow one to adjust RGB gamma curves in FCP?

I am finding the limitations of “highlight” “mid” “blacks” controls rather frustrating and I’m not able to get the look I really want.

The plug-in would have to work in DVCproHD and not cost thousands of dollars.

    Thanks!

No curves, but try out Magic Bullet Colorista from Red Giant. You can download a trial version and if you like it, it’s $199.

I own Final Touch HD (full curves and everything else for $5,000), but since it does not work correctly with XML at the moment, we tried out Colorista and are able to achieve very similar looks with this plug-in.

You just have to watch out for the clamping on very bright shots. With an overly bright shot I’ll actually use FCP’s 3 Way to bring down the highlights to about 100 and then apply Colorista.

Also take a look at Color Finesse, from Synthetic Aperture.

G Super Levels from Graeme Nattress does exactly what you want. It’s included in his Big Box of Tricks for a hunnert bucks. Excellent tool!

I second Walter’s recommendation of Colorista. We were using Final Touch for the better part of two years and Colorista does about 90% of the same things…for $200!

I especially appreciate the keyframeable masks for secondary corrections. It offers real time previews and the renders are insanely fast. Probably the best $200 I have ever spent for any software.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

Unfortunately, Colorista requires that I buy a new computer, so that’s out for the moment.

Color Finesse demo seems to work well, but it’s just too expensive for casual use, and it runs a bit slow on my old g4dual 1gig.

So I guess it’s the big box of tricks, though the demo would not display the graph of the curve, I think it will get me in the ball park without breaking the piggy bank.

How so? It works on all Macs…with FCP 5.1…which is Universal…powerPC macs and Intel.

I use it and love it.

Absolutely. We’re using it on both a Mac Pro and a G5 Quad. Not sure where that information came from, but it’s wrong.

The colorista web site lists the requirements, and they require a faster graphics card with more memory than the one on my g4 dual 1 gig machine.

Despite this, I tried to install the demo and got a warning about the graphics card from the intsall software.

At this point, I don’t think it’s worth upgrading such an old machine.

Ahhh…That makes sense. No, not worth it at this point.

Bruce you propably didnt receave my email…

“Due to the way this curves (Varicam curves) are designed you have to put the exact numeric values to be effective so the Natress neither Colorista plug-ins which are predefined are not effective. You can only use Final Touch in RGB color space not in YUV, but its needed reverse engineering in CFX files (its easy).”

Thats a part of my email I will try to resend it next Thursday…

If the curves are not needed for Varicam then ignore the post
