Color Correction, monitors, etc. etc. etc.
Hey folks, I have an odd question. We’re in the homestretch on our project, and need to do color correction; thus far we have been using a nice (but not intended for the purpose) LCD HDTV as our video monitor, as hooked up via a firewire to a miniDV camera interface. I do know that the tv has DVI input, but also that due to overscan, you dont’ see the enitre picture.
My question is this. What’s better:
1. To use the comptuer’s dual-monitoring capability with the HDTV screen hooked up via DVI to the G5, and after careful calibration of the HDTV as per the advanced monitor calibration setup under system prefs, THEN do color correction on the HDTV, or…
2. Bite the bullet and buy a $500 17″ Panasonic color video monitor, hook it up through the camera, and do our color correction that way.
Please keep in mind that our source media is 24P NTSC/DV, in SD, 16X9 anamorphic. I feel a little nervous about this stage of the project, and will certainly be using my histogram to keep everything at least CLOSE to broadcast safe – but I really don’t want to lose color detail, nor do I want everything to look TOO contrasty when we uprez to HD via Teranex.
If anyone has any advice, I would VERY much appreciate it.
