    Hi there,

I am editing my sister’s wedding which was shot by a friend of hers (who had no idea what he was doing) and am having trouble color correcting it to look somewhat decent. I was given pictures from the wedding to insert throughout the video and would love to match the colors from the video with the colors from the still pictures. Is there anyway to match specific colors (like the white of her dress in the still pic to the white of her dress in the video, the blue in her bridesmaids dresses, etc). I am an offline editor so I don’t usually have to deal with major color correction. I am also not too familiar with color correcting in Final Cut (I normally work on Avid). Any help, tips, suggestions would be more than appreciated. I am trying to make my sister’s wedding video decent but have been given a pile of crap to work with.

    Thanks in advance,
    Lori

The easiest way to CC in FCP is to use the 3Way color corrector. Apply this to your clip.

Now click on the tab in the Viewer to see the thee color wheels.

Notice the eye dropped at the bottom of each wheel.

The wheel on the right is for whites. Use this eye dropper and click the wedding dress.

FCP will use the information from the dress to make it white and the rest of the colors should fall into place.

That gets you started so just tweak from there.

Since you’d like to match the colors in the video to the colors in the still images take a look at the Match Hue feature of the 3-way CC (pg 597 of the manual). Basically using this feature allows you to tell FCP, “Hey, I want the white dress in shot A to match the color of the white dress in shot B.” Now, it’s no magic bullet, but it will get you in the ball park so all you’ll have to do is some minor tweaking.
