Anyone having a problem with flickering after applying color correction in FCP? I am able to get the desired colors, but I often end up with flickering in the corrected areas. I have found that reducing the Edge Thin can help, but I really need to be able to use both correction and Edge Thin. I’ve tried also adding Flicker Filters and Broadcast Safe. I’m working in HDV with FCP 6.0.4. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What kind of project are you working on? Framerate, codec, etc? How are you monitoring? Describe the flickering. It sounds like you are talking about Secondary corrections (Limit Effect) if you are using ‘Edge Thin’, is this true?

    Michael –

    Thanks for the response.

When starting my session to capture, I used Easy Setup – HDV, 1080i60 Firewire Basic, 29.97fps. The footage was shot on a Canon XH-A1 in HD. The Sequence Settings are: 1440X1080 16X9, HD, Field Dominance Upper Odd, Compressor HDV 1080i60. I am using Limit Effect to specific colors in the frame. I am monitoring on an Apple Cinema HD set to 1600X1200 Stretched, Colors Millions, Color set to Cinema HD Display. The flickering is a nervous vibrating change from bright to dark, much like lightning. It is only occurring in the Limit Effect color areas. Timeline is set to Safe RT. Ideas?

Did you render after getting your colors corrected. That flicker is always there for me until I render the clips (a preview green line above the clips?).

    Just like you remember it…
    maybe better.

Aha! I know what you are talking about. You’re gonna need to work on your limit effect. I was going to write out a long explanation, but I think the manual does a good job, so check out page 603 in the FCP manual.

Basically, keep working on your HSL selections. The eyedropper is only a place to start. Tip: You can add HSL values with the eyedropper by holding down ‘Shift’.

    Good luck.
