Color Correction- Canvas vs. Frame Viewer
Hello
I am doing some color correction for a film shot tapeless DVCPro HD 1080p24. I am editing with FCP 7.0.3 on a Macbook Pro with 4 GB RAM and running OS 10.6.7. I am trying to color correct a shot in the color correction window setup. However, there is a pretty radical discrepancy between what the canvas shows and what the frame viewer shows. I have uploaded stills of each. What is even stranger is that when I pull an HSL key using the 3 way color corrector, no changes are shown in the canvas. I am uploading an extreme example to demonstrate what I mean. I have checked to make sure that the key was active (it was). I did a full render, and the discrepancy remained. I also trashed my preferences, but no dice. Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this? Please let me know if you need any more information.

FRAME VIEWERNOTE: My Macbook Pro is hooked up to a Dell monitor. Unfortunately, I do not have access to any kind of monitor. I know, I know, this is not how I should be doing it, but circumstances dictate it unfortunately. However, regardless of the proper protocol, this is a problem that should not be happening, and that I’ve never dealt with until tonight.

Well for starters, the clip in the Viewer isn’t the sequence clip. No sprocket holes… if you double click the clip you’re working with in the sequence it should reflect the changes you’re making.

Not the viewer…the frame viewer. The other tab paired with the video scopes.

I’m confused. The frame viewer is showing the clip with and without the filters. (same clip then, right?)
Re-describe the problem? The Canvas is showing the clip after color correction, right? (without the green sky).

Sorry for the confusion. It’s a tough thing to describe. So the frame viewer allows you to see a sort of split screen comparison of the frame with and without filters (kind of like the preview monitor in compressor). I have it so that the frame viewer in that still is only showing the clip with the filters, hence the ridiculously green sky (also the green squares in the corner mean that it’s the current frame with filters). The image in the canvas that I uploaded is of the same frame with the same filter activated. Both in theory should be showing the same exact image (with the ugly green sky). Hope that’s clearer.
Just some additional info, it only seems to be happening on that shot so far. There are no other filters on it and it matches the sequence settings, so I can’t see anything inherently different with it.

You don’t see changes in the Canvas when you activate a filter?

Frame ViewerNOTE: The frame viewer is split into both the frame with the filters (the left side) and without the filters (the right side). Again, I made the correction extreme to illustrate clearly what is going on.

Does this happen with all filters or just the keyer? Might be a bug in the keyer’s code? I never use FCP for chroma keys… Motion does a better job if you don’t have AE or better.

Again I’m not being clear. When I say doing an HSL Key, I mean using the limiter effect with the color corrector 3-way, not an actual keying out of the shot. As far as I can tell though, it only happens on the color corrector 3-way, and then only when I’m using the limiter, and only on certain shots, although I cannot figure out why those shots and not others. I tried it with the 2-Way Color Corrector last night as well, but had the same problem. It’s probably the same type of problem that you were describing though. Is there anything else you recommend? I’d prefer to stay in Final Cut since I’m already a decent way through the film and it needs to be done by Saturday evening, plus I am not too familiar with Color at the moment. I’ve heard of Colorista though I don’t know much about it. Could that be a solution?
