    Hi there,

I’m in the process of making my first short film, shot on DVC Pro HD 1080p and am close to the color correction and grading phase.

I have access to Apple Color although am aware of problems using an external monitor via firewire in that it cannot be done with Color, is this correct?

I also have access to Adobe After FX and so see my options as either Final Cut Pro or After FX. Is either one favoured for color management? Would either enable me to see the true HD footage on an external monitor?

If you were color grading for broadcast or had all the hardware you need I’d suggest a different route than I’m about to suggest, but…

Just figure where your project will be shown and grade on a similar monitor. So, if the project will be diplayed on a computer or on a projector from a computer, then just use FCP’s 3-way CC and do you best. When you get a few projects under your belt you can use more sophiticated techniques, tools and hardware. Content is king, don’t get hung-up on the technology.

There are a lot more problems that you may encounter in Color, other than monitoring video. One example is that you can’t grade stills in Color. I suggest sticking with FCP’s 3 way CC if you are not that familiar with Color. I also think you should stick and use the same monitor as the one where it will be shown. Good luck!

    Serenity now…

That is correct, Color does not support Firewire monitoring with anything other than an AJA Io HD, and even there only SD monitoring is available.

You need to have the proper hardware to view “true” HD footage on an external monitor like an AJA Io HD or an AJA Kona board. FCP is the easiest tool to color grade with.
