The higher contrast is good Patrick, but only to a point. Unfortunately, the detail in the shadows is lost and the hair becomes mostly one black blob.

Hair looks fine to me.
We need to have a forum where someone posts a still, and then we all take a whack at it and post our results. This is fun.

🙂 This is probably one of the most difficult things to see and understand for people without extensive competent experience in the world of photography. Sometimes, images that seem to look good to the layman tend to look over-processed and lacking details to the technicals. Too rich a color and we get ‘inaccurate’ skintone.. too low and we get flat but realistic color tones. Wonder where and when are we able say, “ok.. this is right” because at the end of the day, the final decision lands on the producer/director/DOP and their vision of what the final end product should look and feel like. A DOP with extensive experience with portraits would prioritise skintones over others for example and his/her view would not necessarily reflect the mood of the scene…
I think color is very subjective and the only real answer is should be right in this should be:
1) The colors/exposure is leveled and has a good range from the white to black point.
2) Contrast should be balanced for acceptable detail level in highlights and shadows as viewed from a calibrated monitor
3) It looks right to the final decision maker 🙂 -
Well, the point was to show to Andy Bis that without being a Colorist is possible to improve the picture with just basic tools.

Very often I really get lost in the middle and four eyes can see more than two.

this is fun 🙂
done using color
very little primary – just taking out some midtone reds
then 2 vignettes in secondaries 1 for the eyes, which i isolated and enhanced a little, and 1 for her face, big vignette coming from upper left which darkens all but her (maybe a little too much)then primary out, most rough work.
a de – saturation of 5%
less reds in shadows, a bit more in mids
contrast
and a touch of greencould be a million other things

Okay – you’re right – I eased up on the contrast just a tad (handled by the “Glamour” plugin)… Here’s some more detail in the hair…

Ok, I want to play too … so have at it.
1) First using FCP’s built in Levels filter to fix the exposure
2) Then fixing up the color using FCP’s built in Color Corrector 3-Way
3) And finally a touch of FCP’s built in Vignette filter just because I like Top Gear (and why not eh?)
