color bars output is off
Posted by Zach Bauer on March 15, 2007 at 7:41 pmI’m generating bars in FCP and it’s sending it out to a vector scope. The colors seem to be off the target points but when I put bars up from a deck they look perfect. I was wondering if there is anyway i can calobrate bars from my G5 or FCP so all my monitors can be set up correctly. Thanks alot for your help.

March 15, 2007 at 7:47 pmDoesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything wrong with the bars in FCP.
You don’t way how the image is getting to the vectorscope. Blackmagic, Aja, Matrox devices? Firewire through a deck or converter? Any of those devices could be shifting chroma, and some of them may have their own calibrations.
You don’t say what the vectorscope is calibrated to. If it’s the deck output from a certain sourcde of bars then it could be the deck or those bars. Etcetera.
Not saying there isn’t something wrong in FCP, but without info on the rest of the system nobody can tell.

what are the settings for the bars?
75% or 100% ?
set to 7.5 or 0 IRE?
HD or SD?are the component cables correct if using analog (best guess)

March 16, 2007 at 4:34 amIs this your scenario? You have recorded bars with a camera. Probably a camera that lets you boost the IRE to 7.5 on DVCam (which is incorrect thing to do 99% of the time). You play back that tape in a deck that doesn’t let you boost analog output to 7.5 ire as it should (such as the DSR-11) so the bars recorded by the camera in this case come out correct. FCP’s bars out of the same deck show up as low, because the deck doesn’t allow you to boost the analog output of black to 7.5 ire.
In the above scenario, FCP is operating correctly, the deck is not, and the camera is set incorrectly. The tapes recorded from FCP would be correct, unless they came from the camera that was incorrect of course.
All digital should be 0ire. No setup. DV decks should be adding setup on their analog outputs. However, many don’t. Their output to a waveform/vectorscope is incorrect.

March 16, 2007 at 10:43 amHow is the FCP signal getting to the Vectorscope? The reason I ask is that not long ago I thought I had your same problem, but I was monitoring the SDI signal though a DigiBeta deck and the internal TBC levels were not in the detent position, thus my levels were off. Tracing the signal flow made it dawn on me to check those TBC settings and putting them back in their default position was all it took to see that the FCP settings were on the mark.
Just my 2 cents. However if you give more info on your set-up you’ll have a better chance at cracking your particular problem.Dual 2.7 GHz G5, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9650, Xserve RAID, AJA IO, 2 20″ Cinema Display, FCP 5.1.2, OS X10.4.8
