Color banding in FCP, in 35mm transfers and in DCP’s
I have a 30 minute movie which contains a few shots that used to be very grainy due to low light and to incorrect gain settings. I was able to reduce the noise using denoise filters but I now have color banding where the noise used to be.
I will be transferring the HD movie to either a DCP or 35mm film.
Does anyone know if 35mm film will reduce the color banding, make it worse, or will it be just the same as the current HD footage I’m editing?
I have the same question about a DCP transfer.
Lastly, does anyone know of anyway to reduce color banding without re introducing noise?Thank you for you time. JA

What do you have been using for de-noising?
There are some really powerful de-noising software available.

The best way to reduce Color banding is by not creating it, and that is about workflow and rendering options.
What kind of HD stuff are you working with?
Codecs, sizes..
Which workflow you’ve been doing? How you have processed your stuff?

Banding sounds like 8 bit versus 10 bit. This may be due to the setup of the denoising but as Rafael asks what did you use and what are your codec and sequence settings?
The 35mm and DCP processes will not mask the banding at all. It shouldn’t make it worse either.

Beside of that what Rafael and Michael said there is an option to test DCP. Download the the EasyDCP and EasyDCP Player demo so you can see wether or how the noise is handled by the JPEG2000 conversion.

If you do this be sure to take the DCP to a theater to test it. Just looking at the DCP on a 8-bit computer monitor to evaluate banding is pointless.
