  • Collect Files error: Bad Reference Number

Posted by Whitlock Dunbar on April 15, 2008 at 6:54 pm

The Collect Files function generates the error Bad Reference Number (-51) followed sometimes by the error “File name”.mov cannot be imported — files of type .mov are not supported (“File name” is the name of my media file).

When I open the session everything works file, so the file seemingly isn’t corrupt. I can’t find info online and I noticed this question was raised here in 2005 but got no replies.

Any clues on these frustratingly obscure errors?

Thanks Dave, that’s an excellent reference. However although he covers error codes 0 through 90, error number 51 isn’t included.

Anyone else know a way around this?

I’m suffering from the same maddening problem. I’ve recently got up to AE CS3 and up until a few weeks ago everything was fine but since last week I’ve been unable to import ‘.movs’ being confronted with the similar

After Effects error: file ‘FILE_NAME.mov’ cannot be imported — files of type ‘.mov’ are not supported.

    (note there’s no error code)

    ARGH!

I’ve re-installed After Effects and also Quicktime (with Quicktime Pro) and nothing has changed. I’ve opened the same project and imported the same ‘.mov’ on another computer and it works fine.

I’ve briefly read the link that Dave La Ronde supplied and although really useful doesn’t help immediately although I’ll go back and properly disect it once I’ve got a coffee…

    Anyone else suffering from this?

    Thanks

    Jim

This link is no longer working. Has anyone found the answer to the -51 error?

Just encountered the same problem. Have had AEFX CS3 working fine on this machine till today. Just made the mistake of allowing Apple to update some software. Now it looks like I’m in for days of lost time….
