i’m almost embarrassed to ask this question, as it should be so simple but it’s driving me nuts.

i take a simple photoshop image with two layers. the topmost layer is set to ‘multiply’ mode. the bottom layer is set to ‘normal’:

i import the image into AE as a composition and place it into my main composition on a layer above a background layer. so that AE will honour the multiply mode layer inside the photoshop composition i tick the ‘collapse transformations’ option and the following weirdness happens:

as you can see, if i move the compo about, it only appears as it should when i drag it over an area in the topleft of the background, corresponding [i presume?] to the width and height of the original PSD file. when it’s anywhere else on the screen it simply disappears.

any ideas why this is. i’ve brought in PSD files in this format and applied a ‘collpase transformations’ before in previous compositions and they’ve never behaved in this strange way.

do you mean save the PSD file out of photoshop with both layers set to ‘normal’ and then open up the PSD file composition in AE and set the top layer to ‘multiply’?

Another way would be to make the precomp bigger setting the comp settings
or switch on collapse within the precomp also…
And another thing: when you import a photoshop it let’s you choose if you want
layersized layers or compsize layers, what did you choose?

neither importing the PSD as ‘composition’ or ‘composition – cropped layers’ made any difference. however your suggestion of making the comp size bigger worked.

my AE project was DV/PAL [720×576] but the imported PSD file was being converted by AE into a composition the same size as the original PSD file. when i adjusted the ‘composition settings’ to make this composition also 720×576 it started behaving as expected.

funny! – i can never remember adjusting the comp size when i’ve done this before. perhaps i’ve just forgotten doing it – or is there a pref somewhere that i may have had set previously, which will automatically create all new comps at the same size as the main project?

    thanks for your help, folks.
