As the Digital Still cameras get better and better for video recording, I”m finding out that their video codecs can’t be edited or exported without rendering.

A few clips are tried were Motion JPEG AVI clips, item properties reveals the codec to be Apple OpenDML JPEG with a data rate of 2.4 MB/sec (An Apple Codec in an AVI wrapper?

I ended up exporting a quick time file while all video was being rendered. So my questions is, what are the Video Codecs that FCP won’t play without render? Is there a list published somewhere to avoid buying cameras with non compatible codecs?

    Hi Pedro,
You can export without rendering to every QT codec. The only condition is that the sequence setting match the footage.
The problem you have is that you are working with AVI, and AVI is not QT.
Export to AVI have to be always done via QT Conversion. Always rendering.
If you would have JPEG QT you could export without rendering.

    Rafael

Thanks Rafael, is there another file type like AVI that FCP can not handle without rendering? What about all the MPEG versions? Are all those ok? I think I also had to render a few MPEG clips? Are there more file types that need render?

    Best and thank you.

    Hi Pedro,
JPEG is not really a QT codec. Is a codec supported by QT, also by AVI and probably by other platforms that I don’t know.
FC works better ith any thing ending in “.mov”.
There are certain kind of MPGs that QT can manage well. Codex like HDV or XDCAM works without problem. But normally they come packed as QT movie.
With things that comes as .mpg, .mp4, etc the behave of FC is un-predictable.
In the end is a matter of Apple to give support to those codec.
Things will come. No long ago you had the ball spinning as soon as you clicked an MPEG. Now is not like that anymore.
