CODEC selection
Which streaming media formats & which Win based apps (our IT group doesn’t support Apple/UNIX OSes) for creating them do people favor?
We are a major research university re-evaluating streaming media formats and, moving forward, evolve from creating small quantities of hand tweaked files to larger quantities of files created less labor intensively. For the past several years we’ve created & streamed Real media for academic events unless a specific project warranted a different format. Migrating to an in-house media server and CODEC development allows us to revisit compressibility vs. quality choices made ~5 years ago.
Typical programs are 1-3 hours duration, contain low subject motion, switch between 1-3 cameras, & frequently include computer displays (power point, web sites, etc.).
Delivery options: audio + video: high speed (wired) intranet, wireless intranet (most popular), broadband, pod cast to portable device & 56k modem; audio only.
Computer displays should scale well to full/near full screen size and be easily readable under high speed options and as legible as possible under low speed options. Real time preferable to batch encoding. Preferably, high bandwidth & near high bandwidth delivery are not separate solutions.
Your thoughtful contributions appreciated,
Best regards,
