codec recommendation besides ProRes to convert h.264 into.
Hello,
I am shooting with the Canon T2i model on 1080 NTSC in h.264 and want to edit the material in FCP. I am using MPEG Streamclip for converting but don’t have the ProRes codec. Is there any other codec to recommend to convert the h.264 into? (Apple Intermediate codec doesn’t work, the red bar in the timeline of FCP doesn’t disappear)

If you have Final Cut Pro you HAVE ProRes. It’s the apple codec that the FCP high def workflow is currently built around.
You should be able to import the T2i native H-264 card files into FCP and re-encode them there.
Try the log and transfer function in FCP and see if the entire CARD will show up in an attached USB card reader. If so, log and transfer will do the re-encode automatically during ingest.

Perhaps you have an older version of FCP? FCP 6 is when ProRes showed up. You could transcode to DVCProHD – that was the codec most of us used before ProRes came around.

I have FCP HD.I will try the log and transfer this evening. Thank you for the advice.
btw. I tried to convert ACI on a different mac with Streamclip and used the FCP (without “HD”) and it worked! No red bar! So it definitely is because of the FCP HD version.
I hope log and transfer will work for me. It can’t be that I cannot edit/convert any h.264.
could it also be a problem of memory? (have 2 GB memory and the ACI data clips are about 300MB each. but it should not be a problem… FCP would rather shut down than merely showing the red bar)

indeed, I have Final Cut Pro HD! I suppose it’s something like 4.5??
(am a little confused about the different namings, FCP 5,6,7,HD,Pro etc)unfortunately I don’t have any DVCProHD either…

FCP HD is version 4.5
AVCHD didn’t exist then. Neither did Log and transfer. You’ll have to transcode to DVCProHD
