I am fairly new to this kind of stuff, so I apologize if this seems like a basic question. Here is my situation: I am editing some old wedding footage into a video for some friends of mine, and outputting it eventually onto a DVD. In addition to making their video, I agreed to put some photo montages on the DVD as well. I am making the photo montages in iphoto mostly because it is pretty easy to create nice looking montages in.

The wedding footage I have is currently in DV/DVCPro-NTSC. I’m trying to determine what would be the best way to export my photo montages out of iphoto, so that I minimize the amount of quality loss in the final product. In other words, should I export the montages in DV/DVCPro, so that they are in the same format as my current video footage, and I don’t have to re-render them in FCP, in order to edit them together with the current footage. Or would it be better to export all the montages in whatever format will be used to put it onto DVD, and rerender my video footage into the same format?

Does this make sense? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

IF you are placing them into a DV sequence, I would export them out as that. If you use a higher resolution they will have to eventually be rendered to the DV codec anyway.

IMO…get out of DV…. there is no need to bring your photos down to 4.2.0 colorspace of DV then down again to DVD compression which i believe is 4.1.1 colorspace. this effectively reduces your color to 4.1.0 = dull/color reduced looking dvd’s.

I would render all footage to ProRes 422 as well as your photo montage… and edit in ProRess 422 timeline.

    I agree with Shane…

BTW, welcome Shane, good to see ya.

Wish we were headed back to The Venetian for another big event before Xmas like last year… That one was fun.

Meanwhile, I hope to see you around a lot more.

DV-NTSC is 4:1:1 and then m2v is 4:2:0. But if Brandon is committed to the extra work that would give better photo montage but the video would be the same quality.
