  • Codec not found. “VTR OK” but no video shows during capture

Posted by Jamesstorm on January 9, 2007 at 7:24 pm

I am using a JVC GR-HD1 HDV camera and a 17″ MBP with FCP 5.0.4. When starting FCP I get a message “Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card.” I don’t know if this is the cause of my problem. The problem is that when trying to capture, no video shows up in the screen. When the camera is on and connected, I see “VTR OK” and can control the playback of the camera from the capture window, but am unable to capture any clips. I can mark in- and out- points, and when I try to capture I see the window and the camera cues back to the in-point, but plays right through and nothing happens in the capture window and no video can be seen. Is the Codec error the cause of this? If so, how can I fix it? If not, what else could be causing the problem? New to FCP, any advice appreciated. Thanks.

James, Check to see if the camera has an internal down convert HDV-> DV. If there is don’t have the camera do this conversion. If you’re settings in FCP are set to capture HDV and the camera is spitting out DV you won’t see a picture but you’ll be able to control the camera. Hope this helps.
