Codec issue?
I have 2 GY-HD100Us, and 2 Dr-Hd100s hard drives. This week, the footage I shot in HD (720p60) has not been opening in any player (QT, VLC, MPEGStreamclip, Final Cut, Premiere). When I attempt to open the file, quicktime gives me the error message “An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.”
Since, I have not been able to shoot footage in HD on either camera to either HD (I’ve switched them between cameras) without all of my files being unusable. I can still shoot and save in SD fine. I can shoot in HD to tape and capture it as well. Looking though old footage shot with this camera in HD, I find that I’m able to open some files, but not others shot in HD. I used MediaInfo to examine the files and all of the videos that are operable have a “Tagged Date” (e.g. UTC 2011-07-22 19:37:28), but the unopenable files do not.
I have gone through setting-by-setting on my cameras and harddrives trying to change how it records timecode and etc, to no avail. I’ve also used Pacfist to downgrade my version of Quicktime Player. Nothing is working. I’ve hosted a couple of files shot with that camera/hdd combo, one that works and one that doesn’t, if anyone wants to take a crack at them:

Actually, I didn’t fully downgrade all of the quicktime components, just the player. I used this tutorial to downgrade all of the quicktime components, and now I can play all of my footage:

Also, as a followup, I called the harddrive manufacturers, and they finally got back to me today. I just got a voicemail, but the highlight of way they said:
“If you’ve upgraded to Quicktime 7.7, or OSX Lion, or to Final Cut 10, your HD files will not be playable.” Be warned if you do or plan on shooting in HD on the DR-HD100.

This has happened to me too. All files recorded on my Firestore DR-100 are no longer playable on OSX Snow Leopard. I initially had the problem after upgrading to Quicktime 7.7 for Final Cut Pro 7 in August (after installing Snow Leopard a couple of months earlier. I was only able to resolve the issue properly by doing a complete system re-install.
Even though I stopped QT7.6 from upgrading the problem returned again last week, I had thought it was to do with iTunes 10.5. I did another re-install and locked iTunes at v9. Them problem came back so I used the Pacifist fix which I thought had worked as I could play the video files, however a lot of other issues occurred, some app icons disappeared, Quicktime H264 exports had no audio.
I will now have to resort to using my older OS 10.5 boot drive for retrieving archived DR-100 files.
I believe the only sure and reliable work around and the one recommended by Focus Enhancements is to set the DR-100 from Quicktime to record as m2t and then use Clipwrap 2 from https://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap to rewrap the files as Quicktimes, this is quite a quick process and I have used and tested it successfully.

I was able to fix this problem in two ways – both temp fixes…
One option, if you have a system that will still play them, is to open the files on that system. Then open all files in FCPro – select and batch export back to the system with the issue. This will simply resave them with a new wrapper. Or open them one by one in Quicktime and save as, self contained back to the problem system, the files will then work.
The other is to revert QT by loading the Snow Leopard install disc, selecting optional installs and choosing the Quicktime 7 installer. Then run the OS 10.6.8 Combined Updater. This resolved the problem on my Snow Leopard system using JVC HDV from the Focus Firestore drives. It shows Quicktime player is still 7.6.6 but I’m not sure which component caused the Atom errors.
Perhaps it’s related to the iTunes update.
