  • Codec Hell – lost ability to read Divx/Xvid on windows

    Hi guys,

after about 3 weeks away i’ve come back to find that in both PP and AE I’m having trouble with divx and xvid source files, which were working perfectly well before. As I’m unclear on how both of those access external codecs I’m at a bit of a loss.

They were all appearing as media offline. so first thing I thought was update ffdshow. at this point it started crashing PP when trying to open the source clip.

So next I uninstalled ffdshow, and went through cleaning up the registry. Now the media is offline again. Now I would have thought it would have then used the xvid codec. Reinstalled the xvid codec, still no dice.

This is a serious problem for me, if I had time i’d probably just flatten the machine and start again as its been a long time since I last did that, but I’ve got a performance on monday (which i found out about yesterday) and need to rework about 6 videos before then. Isn’t that always the way? Things never go wrong when you’ve got plenty of time 🙂

    all advice gratefully recieved!

    Ian

Easy solution: convert everything not using MS DV AVI type2 codec into MS DV AVI type2. Never use Xvid, DivX or other esoteric material for editing.

I think at this time it’s going to take more time to do that than flatten the machine.

Just doing some testing here, I can drop WMVs and Quicktime files onto the timeline ok.

Over the past few weeks i’ve been delving into writing code for DirectShow. Wow it’s quite scarey with all the filters having their own tussle to get in your filter graph. I’m surprised anything works!

    ok, this is getting confusing.

If I create a new project and put in one of the videos I’m having trouble with – no problems. Open the older project with the same file, double click that video to show in the source monitor – it crashes.

start new project, open that video again – fine. Import the older project, double click the same video file in the imported project – crash.

start new project, open that video again – fine. Import the older project, right-click and make offline video in imported project. Link to media by selecting the file again. double click. It doesn’t crash, but it only shows the audio

I can only conclude there must be something being saved with the project that is causing the problem.
