codec for capturing HD on older computer
I’m unable to edit my HDV footage in FCP 5 (using an iMac G5 OSX4 with 1.25 gb memory, 1.8 ghz processor). Should I re-digitize my tapes using a low-res SD codec so I can complete editing and when done, up-res with a HD codec? Ideas on which SD codec to use are appreciated — standard DV-NTSC, or “DV to Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)”, or something else. Thank you!

On your older machine running FCP 5 my recommendation would be to use the NTSC DVCPRO 50 codec. I think it’s the best compromise between quality and file size. My .02

Thank you for your response. I don’t have exactly that codec on my list but do have this one: DV50 NTSC 48 khz. Would this work as well?
(DVCPRO is Pal only and there’s no “50” with it).Thanks again,

You can’t capture HDV as DV50 (also known as DVCPRO 50) unless you had a capture card. HDV and DV are the only formats you can capture this as via firewire. And you have to tell the camera/deck to do the output as DV.
