Clueless newbie needs help with audio/video sync issues
Hi folks– I’m totally new to Vegas and I need your help on an audio/video sync problem. I’m editing several short clips from .WMV files, cutting out the unnecessary stuff using either Edit>Split or the trimmer. This worked fine last week.
This week, though, the audio and video are getting out of sync, whether I group them or not. When I click on Preview – or when I render – the person talking talks for 2-3 seconds before the audio kicks in.
It sounds like I could use the slip tool to edit that, since I’m trying to make minimal edits to these files (for instance, no keyframing), but the video is really fast and squirrelly-looking for a few seconds, too.
I’ve set it to be medium resolution, so it’s not like it’s a super-high-res file and my machine just doesn’t have the strength to deal with it. It’s happening with multiple projects, even brand new ones. Help! How do I sync the audio with the video?
Here are the details of my project:
1. The project media is .WMV, the output is .WMV, medium resolution for viewing in the US and Japan (I am in the US).
2. I’m using Vegas Movie Studio Platform 9.0 Trial on Windows 7 on a Dell Precision T5400 with an Intel Xeon 2.66 Ghz processor and 4 gigs of RAM.
3. The masters are long gone. All I have access to are these WMV files.
4. I haven’t touched any of the settings or playback rates or anything like that. When I click Properties on the file I’m working on now, it says:Loop is checked
Maintain aspect ratio is checked
Smart resample is checked
Playback rate is 1.0
Undersample rate is 1.05. And here’s the information from the Properties>General tab:

Do the original WMV files have audio out of sync? WMV is a terrible format for editing. I would use a free converter like Super(c) to convert them to an AVI format that is easier for Vegas to edit. Use the free HuffYUV or Lagarith codec.
I see that the source is 320×240 15 fps progressive. You should set your project up to the same properties. Use the Match Media Properties button at the top right of the Project Properties window to do this. When you render back to WMV use the same properties (320×240 15fps).

🙂 New to Vegas, and to video editing – I just did my homework on this forum first, to see if I couldn’t get an answer without having to bug anyone. I picked up a few lessons along the way, I guess.
Thanks, too, John – I’ll give the AVI formatting a shot tomorrow to see if that’s any better. For now I’m trying to just hand-sync the audio with the video, and since the videos I’m making are short, it’s working OK, it’s just kind of a manual pain.
