in AE 6.5 and previous versions if you opened a comp in the timeline then closed it, you would be taken back to the comp you had just come from. In AE8 (and maybe AE7, I jumped from 6.5 to 8) when you close the comp it takes you to the next comp in line. Not the comp you have just come from. It only works if the comp you just came from is the next in line. I hope this makes sence!

is there a preference somewhere I need to click or is there a shortcut?

    Sorry just one more thing.

If you close the window manualy it works as it used to. It is only when you use ‘command W’ that it goes to the next comp in line
