Closing Polygon Holes
Posted by Justin Puda on December 29, 2008 at 8:38 pmHello,
I have a set of paths from illustrator of a world map, I am trying to create a 3d model of a world map. When I apply the extrude nurbs to the path there are holes throughout the map, how can I add a cap to the front and back of the extrude nurbs. It’s only extruding directly along the path.

December 29, 2008 at 9:40 pmCaps are usually there by default with an Extrude but it needs a closed spline (or spline segment) for that to happen

December 29, 2008 at 9:46 pmEvery time I drop the world map into an extrude nurbs with the spline closed, the object disappears from the scene. However, I am creating multiple extrude nurbs for this project, the world map is the only one that is giving me these problems.

December 29, 2008 at 10:03 pmcouldn’t hurt, as I said can’t tell without seeing it if you have the obvious stuff covered.

December 29, 2008 at 11:46 pm138,000+ points !!!Way!!! too complex. 🙂 every border is 4 lines and every country has a border. every border should be two lines max and they should be identical (check out 1/2 (approx) along Canada/US border what is that error? — not to mention the African borders) it looks like every country was done separately then they put in the extra border lines to hide the mistakes (or maybe they knew the border lines were going in so they didn’t have to be too accurate (it’s still a pretty detailed job all in all)) …and the extra border lines are not one/country (check out Africa). If you need the countries take out all the extra border lines and see what happens. If you want only the landmass areas and borders are not really important take out everything except the coastlines and join the parts together – easy for North America not so easy everywhere else…

Thank you so much for your help. So, I should make two extrusions than, one of an outline of the landmasses and one of the borders of the countries? Really appreciate your help.

December 30, 2008 at 12:03 amCool, thanks so much for your help. On a side note, the stock map model we originally bought for this project would distort whenever we added a wrap deformer to it. I’m under the impression this is because the landmass for each continent was only made of one polygon face. When I am done recreating those paths, how many segments should I make my extrusion on the face so that I can deform it easily with the wrap deformer?
