Closed Captioning Service in Mississauga or Toronto
Posted by Tonycity on November 27, 2006 at 12:39 amWondering if anyone can put me on to Closed Captioning services in (preferably) Mississauga or Toronto.
My understanding is ….
1) I create and finsih the video.
2) Dump to master tape (this case DVDCam.
3) Give this version to the service rovider, and they do their thing and hand me back the same product with the CC embedded in the video, correct?
4) and then I take that video back into FCPro and export to Mpeg2 to create a DVD.Curious, any other formats I can give them rather than tape?
So anyone be able to point me in the right direction?

November 27, 2006 at 3:34 amHere’s a company in Minnesota that we use for broadcast CC services. No idea on their rates as it’s all contracted through the Producer of the show.
And yes, you’re correct on how it works. In our case we send a fully mastered BetaSP of the show along with a blank BetaSP tape. They send back the show CC’d on the 2nd Beta tape.

November 27, 2006 at 2:39 pmI’m going through the same thing myself. My Producer has decided to go through Video Caption Corporation, http://www.vicaps.com. I understand they charge about $250 for a 30 minute show to encode. Be aware that you get back an encoded Beta SP or DV tape, but if you try and digitize back into FCP, you will lose the encoding. You need to do an insert edit for commercials. Like I said, I’m going through that right now. I’m purchasing a Black Magic Decklink SP today for my Beta SP so I have machine control through the FCP. Good luck.

November 27, 2006 at 5:01 pmEven though I am in Texas and they are in LA, I use a company called Aberdeen Captioning. Their service is fantastic. I make a small format QT movie of my 60 min broadcast, send it to their FTP site and within about 48 hrs. they e-mail me back a QT movie with the capion information over black which I edit into the program.
They have bent over backwards to help me, and I believe this workflow keeps the quality level high (No generation loss on the caption copy). Their rates are real good also.

I think it was around $500 for a 48 min show. To save some cash, we transcribed it first to a word document and they did all the behind the scenes magic.
If you final format is on DVD, ask them for an .SCC file, this will insert directly into DVDSP and save you the re-dig

My company, Aberdeen Captioning (www.abercap.com) does what you’re looking to do. Better yet, you don’t even need to dump your file to tape – NO Generation Loss! All you have to do is create a small digital file, upload to our ftp site and we then create a closed caption file for your Final Cut Pro NLE system and one for the DVD authoring house. This will save you time and money. Please give me a call.
