    Good evening fellow COWS,

In need of someone more intelligent than me – having a captioning problem in Vegas 10d. No matter what I do, the first caption is always dropped – shows up on the timeline and in preview, just not in the print-to-tape rendered output (Line 21 – output to BetaSP – it’s what our state PBS still wants for broadcast – go figure). All the other captions appear just fine and in the right place.

So – anyone with an idea or better yet a solution?

    Thanks

I’ve had this same thing occur several times, so the answer has been (until recently) to drop an empty marker using Spacebar.

The VASST Caption Assistant tool doesn’t do this. JR can probably explain why it’s a problem with the built-in tools.

Agreed. A “sacrificial” blank caption a few seconds before the first real caption will usually so the trick.

    I always wondered why.

Vegas should take care of this for you in the captioning file. Open it with any text editor and it should look something like this:
    Scenarist_SCC V1.0

    01:00:00;00 942c

    01:00:01;18 9420 94ae 9476 5b6d 7573 e9e3 5d80 942c 942f
That first “942c” should be put there by Vegas without you having to do anything. It clears the caption buffer to get ready for your captions. If you don’t see it, add a blank caption as Spot pointed out.

We’ve used VASST Caption Assistant, that Spot mentioned, to caption the first season (13 episodes) of the PBS series “Painting & Travel with Roger and Sarah Bansemer” and haven’t had any captions get missed.
