Closed Caption workflow using Vegas Pro 10 and DVDArchitect
Posted by Larry Brewer on March 12, 2011 at 2:56 amIf I wanted to use Vegas Pro 10 to embed closed captions from a SCC file, into a video file for authoring in DVDArchitect, what would my workflow be?
Standard def, 4 x 3 aspect ratio.
Input file is quicktime.

There is no workflow for this because Closed Captioning is a broadcast technology and not used on DVD’s. DVD’s use subtitles which is totally different technology.
If you want to make subtitles, then you can use the menu item Tools | Scripting | Export Closed Captioning for DVD Architect. This makes a DVD Architect subtitle (.sub) file that DVD Architect will recognise and use.

March 12, 2011 at 3:27 amI understand the difference between subtitles and closed captions as I have placed both on DVDs with the ability to turn on either or both. scc files can be embedded into the dvd stream and when played out of a DVD player, line 21 will contain the caption data. (But not with HDMI hookup)
I can accomplish this using another embedding software, DVDLab Pro2, for single movie, no -menu DVDs. I need DVDArchitect to construct menus on this DVD.

March 12, 2011 at 3:40 amI didn’t realize that DVD players would transmit closed captioning data. The Vegas help file states:
Line 21 captions are supported during rendering for any media format when using a frame size of 720×486 pixels (or taller) and a frame rate of 29.97 fps.
So Vega should be able to embed the captions in the MPEG2 stream and when I render as MPEG2 and bring the file back into Vegas the closed captions are seen in the file but I’m not sure if these are just Vegas embedded markers or real cc data.
Have you tried this?

March 12, 2011 at 3:47 amI’ll give that a try, but I believe this will give me “actual line 21” burned in data, not embedded data.

March 12, 2011 at 4:05 amI just tried the 486 line mpeg render for my DVD and Vegas doesn’t like that setting…. “and error occured while creating the media file… The reason for the error can not be determined.
I can finish this project by authoring the DVD in DVDArchitect, and embedding the scc file after the fact.

March 12, 2011 at 2:00 pmI would report the error to Sony and point out that their documentation says that this should work and see what they say.
