I’m attempting to output to HDCAM and use a .SCC file for closed captioning. I’m running FCP7 with an AJA Kona 3 and a Sony HDW-F500 deck. I spoke with Sony tech support to ensure CC was enabled on my deck, and all settings are confirmed. I’m connecting to the deck via HD-SDI and have VANC turned on in my Kona Control Panel.

Currently, the only way I have to check if the data is on the tape is to capture since my monitor doesn’t support CC decoding. Because of this I’m not even 100% certain the CC is laying to tape.

All CC threads on the forums are pretty out dated it seems. So, to clear this up, is it possible to output closed captioned content to HDCAM with FCP7 and Kona 3?

Yes. But you really need a monitor to check it.

    Hi Andrew,
The short answer is that you can’t really use a SCC file as-is for HD captioning. FCP used to give an error if you tried this, although in 7.0.3 the error message doesn’t appear for some reason.

SCC files only contain CEA-608 data, which is the old SD analog standard. HD tapes need to have CEA-708 captions. Right now the only software that makes CEA-708 captions for FCP is MacCaption. So you should get your SCC file converted to CEA-708 by a caption service that uses MacCaption.

That doesn’t solve your monitoring issues, but at least there’s a chance of your tape being up to spec. 🙂

    Best regards,

    Thanks guys.

Gotta love the final cut bugs and omissions. Thanks for that info Jason. I have since been able to successfully lay CC to tape. There were some hardware restrictions with the AJA Kona that I wasn’t aware of. (I discussed those in this thread. https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/279/633)

I’ll have to check in with the client about the .SCC they are providing, as they are coming to me to only use one of the few HDCAM decks that are in this state.

    Thanks again!
